The Center of Training and Support for Small Scale Farmers of Araripe-Chapada

The Center of Training and Support for Small Scale Farmers of Araripe (CHAPADA) was founded by a small group of family farmers and council technicians from Araripina,in the sertão region of Pernambuco in April 1994.

The work of CHAPADA is carried out in ten municipalities in the region of Araripe, concentrating on the needs of family farmers organised in associations, cooperatives, unions and forums.

As well as introducing sources of healthy foods and generating work and income for family farmers the project aims to give access to markets to enable the farmers to sell their agricultural products.

CHAPADA promotes educational measures that strengthen the represented family farmer organisations with the objective of facilitating access to public resources whilst defending social rights and citizenship.

When carrying out projects, the institution takes into account and discusses gender issues concerning inequality and differences that exist between the sexes. The objective of these discussions is to promote equal opportunities for all.

In the area of projects, CHAPADA is carrying out participative diagnoses in 9 municipalities in the Araripe region, focusing on apiculture and fruit growing as well as promoting exchange visits for family farmers and regional seminars for the development of agro-ecological practices in the region.

The Northeastern Center for Popular Medicine - CNMP

The Northeastern Center for Popular Medicine, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), was founded in 1988. The organisation is committed to the national struggle for primary health care and views the establishment of SUS (the public health system) as a victory for all Brazilians.

This organisation came about through popular action that began in 1979 after a study on the use of medicinal plants was carried out in Casa Amarela, a neighbourhood of Recife. At the time there was a high rate of child malnutrition and bad dietary habits in general, cancer and precarious health care for women, coupled with other social problems including the inhuman queues at INPS (the National Social Security Institute) a discriminatory and excluding system that treated the poor as third-class citizens.

The vision of CNMP is to collaborate in the promotion of INTEGRAL HEALTH for all within the new concept of a healthy countryside as well as healthy cities promoted by WHO. The basis of this is the concept of man as a bio-psycho-social, cultural, political and environmental being whose priority is collective action to eliminate risk factors and participate in sustainable development.

CNMP carries out projects thath develop the work of various communities in 3 municipalities in the Agreste region of Pernambuco to promote healthy eating and optimise agro-ecological production.

Rural Community Education Centre - CECOR

The Rural Community Education Centre works with 30 rural communities in the Serra Talhada area of Pernambuco as well as in nearby municipalities. CECOR started operating in 1980 with a project of Catholic Community Education and formally became an NGO in 1992.

The mission of CECOR is to contribute to improved living conditions and to give technical support to rural communities in the semi-arid area(s) of Brazil, thus strengthening the rights of these communities.

CECOR works in two areas: living in a semi-arid area, which focuses on increasing and diversifying production to guarantee food supplies as well as teaching how to access and increase the quantity and quality of water supplies. The second is access to markets which aims to strengthen the organisations and associations of small-scale producers.

In the area of projects, CECOR promotes agroecology and organic agriculture in 7 municipalities through technical assistance and workshops in the fields of agro-forestry systems (SAFs), natural pesticides, medicinal plants, organic vegetable gardens and access to markets.

Quilombola Association of Conceição das Crioulas – AQCC

AQCC is a grassroots association that was formed in July 2000 by uniting 10 separate associations of quilombola producers and rural workers.
AQCC was born out of a need to intensify the fight for the rights (in particular the right to education) of the people of Conceição das Crioulas. The objective of AQCC is community development – taking into account existing realities and historical factors. Promoting the potential within the community is a core value as is promoting awareness of the black community and its importance in constructing a just and equal society and challenging discrimination and racism.  One of the biggest battles of Conceição is the battle to hold onto their land – an area of approximately 17,000 hectares – and work the land in a sustainable manner.
